Why Donating A Car To A Veteran Charity Is So Easy

by Dennis Fletcher

Donating a car to a charity for veterans is an easy way to get rid of a car you no longer need while also helping veterans and obtaining a tax write-off. In many cases, you won't even need to deliver the vehicle and it will be picked up for you.

Receive a Tax Deduction

When donating a car, most of the paperwork will be taken care of for you and you will only have to sign on the dotted line. You will then be given a receipt that you can then use to obtain a tax deduction from the IRS. The tax deduction you receive will be based on how much the car sells for and whether the tax deduction is for the fair market value of the vehicle or the actual amount it sold for.

Get Rid of Your Car

When donating your car, make sure to call ahead of time to verify that they will be able to accept your type of vehicle. While many charities can accept any type of vehicle, it's important to make sure.

When the donation service comes to pick up your car, make sure that you have removed all of your belongings. If your car has a sound system that you would like to install in a different vehicle, make sure to remove this as well.

Help Veterans in Need

Your car will be taken away and sold. If it cannot be driven, it may be taken to a scrapyard so it can be sold for parts. The funds raised through the selling of your car will be used to help veterans in need of financial assistance.

Don't Worry About Repairing Your Vehicle

You might think about selling your car for cash. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to find a buyer for your vehicle. If your car is in bad condition, you are much less likely to sell it unless you have it repaired first and this forces you to pay money for a car that might never sell.

If you donate your car, you will not have to repair it because the repairs, if necessary, will be handled by the car donation service instead. However, it's also important to keep in mind that you will receive a higher tax deduction the more that your car is sold for. Therefore, it's best to deliver the car yourself if you can and to work with a charity that does not rely on a third party so the maximum amount will go to the charity.

About Me

Never Ignore the Signs of a Car Problem

My parents surprised me with a car as a high school graduation gift. It wasn't brand new, but it looked great and ran very well. Everything was going well with it until one day it started making a funny noise that I just ignored. My check engine light also came on sometimes, but sometimes it would shut off. I ignored this all and decided my car was just "quirky." One day, I was driving a long distance to a friends house and my car "died" at a stop light. I then regretting ignoring the signs something was wrong with my car. Thankfully, it turned out I had a broken serpentine belt and it could be replaced. After this incident, I have been determined to learn more about the signs of car problems and what they mean. I want to share what I am learning on a blog to help others!
