Moving Your Car Over A Long-Distance Relocation

by Dennis Fletcher

When you are making a long-distance move, you may not want to drive your car to your new home. If you have a moving company move your household items, hiring a vehicle transport company to move your car can free you up to travel by air or train to your new home.

Transporting on a Car Carrier

Large companies that specialize in moving cars often use a car carrier and a semi-truck to move many cars at once. The process may take some time because the companies often wait until they have a full load to move a truckload of cars. They may also want to wait until they have a few cars going to the same area as yours is before they move the load. The cost of these transport services may be pretty reasonable, but if the timing of the delivery is not going to work for your arrival, you might want to look at other options.

Hotshot Transporters

A hotshot is a trailer that attaches to the back of a smaller truck: often a one-ton pickup truck with a 5th-wheel hitch. The trailer may only hold one or two cars, and the price is often negotiable because the driver is working for themselves. The time frame can be set to meet your needs, and the deal you make may even include a bonus for arriving on time, so if the delivery is late, you pay less for the delivery. The driver needs to have insurance on your car while it is on the truck so you have some protection if something happens to it while it is en route.

Transport Drivers

Another way you can move your car is to hire a driver or driving team to drive your car from your old home to your new home. The drivers need to have insurance or be bonded so you are protected if something happens along the way, but this method of transport is common for people moving cars several times a year between winter and summer homes.  The cost is much lower than hiring a truck to move the car, but there is an increased chance of something happening to the car along the way.

This method is not for everyone and you have to have some trust in your transporter so you are not worrying the entire time that the driver is going to take the car and never show up at your home. Ask for references if this is something you are considering to move your car.

About Me

Never Ignore the Signs of a Car Problem

My parents surprised me with a car as a high school graduation gift. It wasn't brand new, but it looked great and ran very well. Everything was going well with it until one day it started making a funny noise that I just ignored. My check engine light also came on sometimes, but sometimes it would shut off. I ignored this all and decided my car was just "quirky." One day, I was driving a long distance to a friends house and my car "died" at a stop light. I then regretting ignoring the signs something was wrong with my car. Thankfully, it turned out I had a broken serpentine belt and it could be replaced. After this incident, I have been determined to learn more about the signs of car problems and what they mean. I want to share what I am learning on a blog to help others!
