Why You Shouldn't Buy A Used Transmission

by Dennis Fletcher

If your car is in need of a transmission, you could be looking for ways that you can save money on the repair. You might have thought about buying a used one, which can seem like a good way to shave down costs. Even though people do sometimes do this successfully and are happy with their decisions, however, many people find that it's not a good choice. These are a few reasons why you might not want to buy a used transmission for your car.

A New One Might Cost Less Than You Think

A lot of people get really nervous about the cost of a transmission replacement. After all, you might have always heard that this is a very expensive repair. Depending on where you buy the transmission from, who does the work and what type of car you have, you might find that buying a new transmission will be more affordable than you think. It's always a good idea to look into the cost of a brand new transmission first; then, you might find that buying new is actually within your budget after all.

It Might Have a Lot of Wear and Tear

Another thing that you should consider is the fact that a used transmission might have a lot of wear and tear. This means that even if the transmission does work well now, there's a strong chance that it will wear out a lot more quickly than a new one would. Then, you might find yourself in the same situation that you're in right now in a few years, and you may have to buy yet another transmission for your car well before you intended to.

It Might Not Have a Warranty

Anything can go wrong with a transmission, particularly when you're buying a used one. The good news is that if you buy a brand new transmission, you may find that the transmission will have a long warranty. This means that if something goes wrong with it during the warranty period, you may be able to have the transmission repaired or replaced for free. If you buy a used transmission, on the other hand, there is a very good chance that it will not have a warranty at all. If it does, the warranty period will generally be short, meaning that if problems occur in a few months, the transmission might not be covered anymore.

As you can see, even if a used transmission might seem like a good idea for your car, you might find that it's not the best choice. If you talk to a good transmission repair professional, such as at Mr Transmission, you can find out more about your options and can have a transmission installed in your vehicle.

About Me

Never Ignore the Signs of a Car Problem

My parents surprised me with a car as a high school graduation gift. It wasn't brand new, but it looked great and ran very well. Everything was going well with it until one day it started making a funny noise that I just ignored. My check engine light also came on sometimes, but sometimes it would shut off. I ignored this all and decided my car was just "quirky." One day, I was driving a long distance to a friends house and my car "died" at a stop light. I then regretting ignoring the signs something was wrong with my car. Thankfully, it turned out I had a broken serpentine belt and it could be replaced. After this incident, I have been determined to learn more about the signs of car problems and what they mean. I want to share what I am learning on a blog to help others!
